Greening of built-up neighbourhood in Malmö, Sweden

Urban context

Within the city of Malmö, the built-up suburb of Lindängen is considered a vulnerable neighbourhood. Culturally and socio-economically diverse, the neighbourhood has an especially young population. Residents have low rates of higher educational attainment and employment level. The participation rate in elections and life expectancy are also lower than other areas of Sweden. The area is densely populated, with several high-rise blocks, and the availability of and access to green space are low. Aiming to change this, the greening initiative in Lindängen is part of Clever Cities, a Horizon 2020 research programme using nature-based solutions to address issues in the urban environment and promote social inclusion in cities across Europe, South America and China. 

Measures and outcomes

Clever Cities Malmö is collaborating with local residents and other stakeholders to co-create plans for nature-based solutions in Lindängen. Citizens’ involvement fosters a sense of ownership and encourages the use of the renewed urban spaces. Shared green spaces are expected to promote healthy outdoor activities and allow communities to grow food, and aim to enhance social cohesion. A fun green area with edible elements has been proposed by the residents, to increase biodiversity and at the same time make the area more attractive. Property owners in Lindängen are supported to apply for funding for green initiatives. Activities in Malmö have been inspired by London’s Clever Action Lab, which implements nature-based solutions in an area comparable to Lindängen.
