Term

methaemoglobinaemia

Term
In some poisonings, haemoglobin (the substance in the red blood cells to which the oxygen is fixed) may be transformed to methaemoglobin. Methaemoglobin lacks the ability of binding the oxygen; consequently lack of oxygen occurs in the organism. When a certain amount of haemoglobin has been transformed to methaemoglobin, mucous membranes and skin become bluish and discoloured.
