Results at EU level - dashboards

Based on data from Member States, several analysis and statistics were made at the EU or EU biogeographical level. These can be downloaded and consulted in an interactive way (dashboards). These interactive tools cover the main themes of the nature reporting for which an EU analysis is done.

Reporting from the Member States

Birds Directive Article 12 reporting

Member States report on the progress of implementation of the Directive. The report focuses on the trends of bird populations and contains information on main pressures and threats, on conservation measures and on impact of the Natura 2000 network. The reports from Member States follow the agreed formats and methodologies allowing for assessments across EU. As part of their reports, Member States deliver maps with the distribution of the breeding bird species.

Habitats Directive Article 17 reporting

Member States monitor the conservation status of the habitats and species listed in the Annexes of Habitats Directive and report on the progress of implementation of the Directive. This report focuses on the assessment of conservation status and trends of species and habitats. In addition, the report contains information on main pressures and threats, on conservation measures and on impact of Natura 2000 network. The reports from Member States follow the agreed formats and methodologies allowing for assessments across EU. As part of their reports, Member States deliver maps with the distribution of the habitats and species.

Data quality and coherence

These dashboards highlight some critical gaps or inconsistencies in Article 12 and 17 reporting for the period 2013-2018. Inconsistencies of the data collected from the latter reporting with the data from the Natura 2000 dataset are also highlighted.

• Coherence between Natura 2000 and Article 17 habitat areas

  Information per Member State on the similarities and differences of habitat type areas reported in the two datasets.

• Coherence between Natura 2000 and Article 17 species population

  Information per Member State on the similarities and differences of species population reported in the two datasets.

• Coherence between Natura 2000 and Article 12 bird populations

  Information per Member State on the similarities and differences of bird populations reported in the two datasets.

• Data quality and completeness of habitats and species group

  Information per Member State per group of habitats, non-bird species and bird species under Article 17 and Article 12 that is missing or unknown. Information on the methods used for surveillance are also provided.

• Quality of the parameters assessing conservation status

  Information per Member State and per group of the Article 17 habitats and species on the methods that were used for assessing the parameters ‘habitat area’ and ‘structure and functions’ for habitat types, and ‘population’ and ‘habitat of the species’ for non-bird species.

• Coherence of information on change and reason for change.

  Information per Member State on the incoherencies in reporting change and reason for change from the previous reporting round.

• Information on conservation measures

  Information per Member State per group of habitats, species and birds on the status, main purpose and location of measures taken for Article 17 and Article 12.

• Quality of Favourable Reference Values

  Information per Member State and per habitat and species group, specifically on the quality of Favourable Reference Range and Area values for habitats, as well as the quality of Favourable Reference Range and Population values for species.

• Coherence between habitat condition and total habitat area

  Compares the total area covered by habitat with the total habitat area reported under ‘structure and functions’ that indicates the condition of the habitat, per Member State per habitat group (and per each habitat type separately).

• Evaluation of reported habitat areas

  Information per Member State, on the total reported Annex I habitat area under Article 17, the total reported Annex I habitat area within Natura 2000, the total country area and the total sealed area of the country.

  Information per Member State analysing the data quality and coherence of nature reporting data under Article 12 and Article 17. These factsheets are better understood when seen together with the relevant dashboards listed above.
