Number of people affected by flooding per million population in the WHO European Region (total over the period 2000–2011). ‘People affected’, as defined in EM-DAT, are people who require immediate assistance during a period of emergency, including displaced or evacuated people. EM-DAT/CRED and the Dartmouth Flood Observatory were analysed to determine the flooded countries in the WHO European Region and the impact of these floods.

Methodology:: EM-DAT data for flooding and wet mass movement events was extracted for the countries in the WHO European Region for 2000 to 2011 from the website http://www.emdat.be/advanced-search. EM-DAT: The OFDA/CRED International Disaster Database – www.emdat.be – Université Catholique de Louvain – Brussels – Belgium. The rate per million was calculated with the average population in each country as reported in the HFA database. Mpa

Additional information

EM-DAT defines "affected" as "People requiring immediate assistance during a period of emergency, i.e. requiring basic survival needs such as food, water, shelter, sanitation and immediate medical assistance. Appearance of a significant number of cases of an infectious disease introduced in a region or a population that is usually free from that disease."

Map also cover Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
