Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia; 38 GW-bodies. Nordic countries: Finland, Norway; 25 GW-bodies; Swedish data are not included due to a data gap. The drinking water maximum admissible concentration (MAC) for nitrate of 50 mg NO3/l is laid down in Council Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended for human consumption. Background concentrations of nitrate in groundwater (<10 mg NO3/l) are shown to aid the assessment of the significance of the nitrate concentrations (in association with the drinking water MAC).
