Impact of the transition to a climate-neutral economy
The European Green Deal is steering the EU on its path to transform into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy, with no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. At the same time, it aims to promote EU cohesion and maintain social fairness, leaving no person behind — key objectives of the European Pillar of Social Rights.
But the precise trajectory of this ‘just’ transition is highly uncertain and the challenges facing EU policymakers are many and complex. On the one hand, the industrial restructuring required for the transition depends on successfully leveraging mission-driven innovation to secure the economic prosperity of European regions. On the other, socioeconomic policies will be required to deliver fair results for citizens across EU Member States and regions and ensure public support for the transition.
What are the impacts of the green transition on the EU labour market and communities? What opportunities and risks do climate change policies bring? How can we ensure a just and fair transition for all European citizens? How can we inspire action in the right direction?
EEA's role in the event
Against this background, Eurofound and the EEA are organising a webinar 'Understanding the socio-economic impact of the transition to a climate-neutral economy and what is required to make the European Green Deal?' a reality' to examine how the EU can strengthen the socio-economic dimension of the Green Deal and secure the buy-in of citizens on measures to help combat climate change.
Jock Martin, Head of Coordination, Networks and Strategy at the EEA, will be joined by Maria Jepsen, Deputy Director of Eurofound, and Luke O'Callaghan-White, Programme Manager for Climate, Energy and Sustainability at Friends of Europe to discuss these pressing issues.
