EEA's role in the event

We are an agency of the European Union and deliver knowledge and data to support Europe's environment and climate goals. Our core tasks are supporting policy development and key global processes, offering analytical expertise, and providing and maintaining an efficient reporting infrastructure for national and international data flows. In collaboration with our partner network, Eionet, we inform decision-makers and the public about the state of Europe’s environment, climate change and wider sustainability issues. In the following videos, we would like to share the backstory of this cooperation and provide insight into our mandate and work at the EEA.

About the artist

Simon Chevalier is a French artist and designer and regularly works with the Lyon-based company LUX led by producer Lucile Cassassolles. They collaborate on every aspect of the process, from designing and programming light art to production and setup, earning them the FRENCH DESIGN 100 AWARD in 2022 and 2024. Simon's passion for placing his art in public spaces, making it freely accessible to everyone, contributes to their participation in festivals like this, fostering a more diverse audience.

Environmental considerations are integral to their artistic process. The main structure utilises easily reusable materials such as steel and aluminum. Simon is currently exploring the use of old cans for his work and incorporates parts from previous installations to create new artworks. Everything is crafted in France, supporting local suppliers. The ethos behind the light sculptures is to offer a simple, minimalist experience without relying on new, polluting, and energy-consuming technologies.

His art consistently reflects connections with nature, evident in previous works at the Light Festival, such as "L'Etoile," portraying the polar star, "Soleils," reflecting on the cycle of life, and "Les Oiseaux" with four birds displayed on Kongens Nytorv in front of the EEA in 2023.

This year’s installation, their fourth consecutive year at the Light Festival in Copenhagen, is placed on Kongens Nytorv.

Our eyes on the earth

Copernicus is the Earth Observation component of the European Union's space programme. Utilising state-of-the-art satellite imagery, the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service keeps a watchful eye on the planet, providing essential land data for informed decision-making. This enables us to nurture our present-day surroundings and ensure a sustainable legacy for generations to come.
