Methodology
Based on data officially reported by countries under the EU Environmental Noise Directive (2002/49/EC) up to 01/01/2019. Because of gaps in the reported data, a gap-filling routine is used to estimate the total population exposure to high noise levels (ETC-ATNI (forthcoming, 2019)).
Additional information
There are comparability issues between 2007 and the other reporting years because of different reporting requirements. There may be comparability issues between 2012 and 2017 due to lack of common assessment methods or incomplete reporting of exposure assessments. Due to gaps in the reported data, a gap-filling routine was used to estimate the number of people exposed to high noise levels in 2012 and 2017, introducing a degree of uncertainty in the assessment.
