Methodology

The Demographic Dependency Index data (represented by the number of people under 20 years old and over 65 years old divided by the number of people 20-65 years old) have been extracted from the Urban Audit database and joined with the corresponding Urban Audit cities shapefile. The reference year is 2004; data for BG, CZ, FR, IE, CY, LV, FI is from 2001. For this index the relation of the young and old citizens is related to the working age population. The calculation result is multiplied by 100 and represented as percentage value giving the share of young and old people compared to the working age population. After joining the statistical with the geographic data the information is mapped as coloured dots.

Additional information

The number of people under 20 years old and over 65 years old is divided by the number of people 20–65 years old and multiplied by 100.

Data for Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Ireland and Latvia are for 2001.
