Analyse how much bioenergy could be produced in Europe without harming the environment
Methodology
The European Forest Information Scenario (EFISCEN) model was used to project the possible future development of forest resources in the European Union. The model uses national forest inventory data as input. Only 21 of the EU-25 countries could be included in the scenario analysis because no suitable inventory data was available for Greece, Luxembourg, Malta and Cyprus. Both residues and complementary fellings were calculated using the environmental assumptions made in that study. The calculation of forest residue potentials thus considered only stem residues (tops) and branches as it was assumed that roots and foliage would remain in the forest. Complementary fellings were calculated with the reduced maximum sustainable harvest level.
