Chart (static)
The graph shows the development of the indirect global environmental pressures caused by household consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages in the EU-27 over the period 1996-2009. 6 environmental pressure categories are included: GHG emissions, tropospheric ozone precursors emissions, land use, water use, acidifying air pollutant emissions, material use. Developments in household consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages in 2005 prices are shown alongside for comparison. It does not cover household storage and preparation of food or management of household food waste. Caution is needed when comparing pressures with expenditure as they might include different groups of products.
Only environmental pressures land and material use are available to 2009. Other environmental pressures are only calculated up to 2008.
The calculations behind the graph have been carried out by JRC IPTS using environmentally extended input output analysis on the data included in the World Input Output Database. The calculations are on the indirect global environmental pressures caused by household consumption expenditure. The results of calculations were sent personally to the ETC/SCP by the IPTS project manager. The data gave pressures caused by EU-27 purchases by households split into 12 COICOP 1 digit categories. Direct pressures from households are NOT included. Pressures caused by expenditure on COICOP CP01 Food and non-alcoholic beverages for all EU-27 individual countries were extracted from the data for all years, pressures and countries. The data was summed together for all EU-27 countries for each year from 1996 onwards and each pressure.. Household expendture data in 2005 prices on CP01 Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages was extracted from Eurostat for EU-27 as a whole for 1996 onwards. All developments were then indexed by dividing by 1996 values and multiplying by 100.
