Area of drought impact on vegetation productivity in the EU-27

The chart shows the annual area affected by drought during the period 2000-2023 for the EU-27 region, by ecosystems types.

Methodology

The size of the impacted area is calculated annually from the sum of those 500mx500m grid cells, where both the soil moisture and the vegetation productivity anomaly was below -1 and -0.5 standard deviation, respectively. The vegetation productivity is estimated using the Medium Resolution Vegetation Phenology and Productivity datasets of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service.
