Making the economy more circular can minimise resource extraction and waste, improve resource efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions, and contribute to conserving biodiversity.
However, Europe’s economy is still largely linear and would benefit from re-thinking the way products and materials are designed, produced, marketed, used and recovered. This requires more investments in upscaling promising innovations and better monitoring of progress towards circularity.
The EEA has produced around 20 publications dealing with the subject that can help reply to this broad question. Please see, for example, Paving the way for a circular economy – insights on status and potentials, The circular economy and the bioeconomy – partners in sustainability, and Circular by design – Products in the circular economy. Our latest report on Accelerating the circular economy in Europe – State and outlook 2024 also offers a comprehensive analysis of the state of play of the transition to a more circular economy in Europe and the strong policy push we have seen in recent years, together with options and prospects to further accelerate it.
