This figure identifies the net emission in CO2 equivalents for the treatment of 1 tonne of kitchen and garden waste for each of the 5 treatment options: landfilling, incineration, composting, home composting and anaerobic digestion. The average EU treatment mix in 2008 is also included.

Methodology

Emission factors are used from different studies in order to show the net emissions (direct minus avoided emissions) derived from the treatment of one tonne of kitchen and garden waste in a landfill, incineration plant, central composting plant, home composting and anaerobic digestion plant. Moreover, the emissions associated with the treatment of one tonne of kitchen and garden waste, according to the current EU treatment mix, are also shown in the graph.
