Fishing effort is divided differently over the various techniques gear. In order to express how this may translate into seafloor disturbance we distinguish five categories based on fishing technique and gear type that impact the seafloor differently: mobile gears with high (Beam trawl & Dredge), low (Bottom trawl & Seine) and no impact (Pelagic trawl) on the seafloor together with two types of passive gear of which the longlines have less impact than the Gillnets, pots & traps.

The category "Unknown" means vessels for which effort is recorded but not attributed to any gear category.
